General Questions
How long has Independent Rebuild Specialist been rebuilding engines?
Independent Rebuild Specialist was founded in 1999 and has grown from a field service operation into a specialist in high-horsepower engine remanufacturing. Specialization has been central to our growth, and over time we narrowed our focus to the engine platforms where we could build the greatest depth of experience, process control, and consistency.
What makes Independent Rebuild Specialist different from a dealer or general diesel rebuilder?
We are not a general diesel repair shop or broad-line equipment rebuilder. We specialize in CAT 3500 and C175 engines and focus on providing a controlled rebuild process, direct accountability, detailed documentation, and practical support for customers who cannot afford premature failure.
Why do customers choose Independent Rebuild Specialist instead of a dealer or larger broad-line provider?
Customers often come to us when they want more specialization, clearer accountability, faster communication, or additional options around engine availability. Rather than competing primarily on name recognition or price, we compete on process control, documentation, parts quality, responsiveness, and specialized expertise in CAT 3500 and C175 engines.
Why does Independent Rebuild Specialist specialize in CAT 3500 and C175 engines?
These engines operate in demanding applications where rebuild quality, reliability, and uptime carry significant operational consequences. Specializing allows our technicians, processes, tooling, inventory, and quality controls to remain focused on a defined group of high-horsepower engine platforms.
What does specialization mean for the quality and reliability of a rebuilt engine?
Specialization means the work is not treated as just another diesel rebuild moving through a general-purpose shop. Our team works repeatedly with the same engine families, giving us in-depth knowledge of the platform, its different arrangements, and the configuration changes required for different applications and operating environments.
What industries do you serve with engine rebuild and remanufacturing services?
We primarily serve mining, oil and gas, and industrial operations where equipment reliability and uptime directly affect production. Our customers typically operate high-horsepower equipment where premature engine failure can create significant operational and financial consequences.
Can you rebuild or remanufacture customer-supplied engines and cores?
Yes. We can inspect and evaluate customer-supplied engines or cores to determine whether they meet minimum rebuild requirements. If they are suitable, we can rebuild or remanufacture them to specification. If a unit falls outside acceptable limits, we will clearly explain why and recommend the best next step.
Do you have remanufactured engines available for urgent replacement needs?
We maintain a large inventory of cores and ready-to-ship rebuilt engines to give customers more options when availability matters. Current availability varies by engine model and arrangement, so customers should contact us to discuss their specific requirements and timeline.
Which parts of the engine rebuild process are completed in-house?
Major rebuild functions including teardown, inspection, machining, assembly, and painting are handled within our facility. Keeping these stages under one roof reduces unnecessary handoffs and gives us greater control over workmanship, scheduling, communication, and accountability.
How does controlling the rebuild process in-house improve accountability?
When fewer critical stages are handed between outside vendors, responsibility is clearer and communication is more direct. Our team can track the engine through the rebuild, document the work performed, and address questions without relying on multiple disconnected providers.
How does Independent Rebuild Specialist document the work performed during a rebuild?
Documentation can include inspection findings, measurements, component condition, photographs, parts information, quality-control records, and final testing information. This gives customers greater visibility into the work performed instead of asking them to rely only on a finished engine and a promise.
How does Independent Rebuild Specialist support customers after an engine leaves the facility?
Support can extend through transportation, installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, maintenance, and warranty-related needs depending on the customer and program. We believe accountability should continue after the rebuild is complete, especially when an issue affects equipment availability.

Warranty claims require detailed information about the engine, operating hours, failure date, failed component, and reason for repair or replacement. Complete documentation helps our team evaluate the issue accurately and move the claim toward resolution without unnecessary delays.
Engine Questions
Why choose a remanufactured engine instead of buying a new engine?
A professionally remanufactured engine can help reduce lead time, extend the useful life of valuable equipment, and provide an alternative when new-engine availability is limited. When downtime matters, a quality remanufactured engine provides a shorter path to getting critical equipment back to work quickly.
What types of engines does Independent Rebuild Specialist remanufacture?
Independent Rebuild Specialist specializes in remanufactured CAT 3500 and C175 engines for demanding mining, oil and gas, and industrial applications. That narrow focus allows us to concentrate our people, processes, tooling, and quality controls on the engines our customers rely on in uptime-critical operations.
How do I get pricing or check availability for a CAT 3500 or C175 engine?
Contact our team with the engine model, arrangement or serial number if available, application, location, and desired timeline. That information helps us determine the most appropriate engine option, current availability, and next steps.
How does Independent Rebuild Specialist help reduce the risk of premature engine failure?
Our rebuild process is built around specialization, controlled in-house work, genuine OEM parts, documentation, and performance verification before delivery. Performing the entire rebuild at our facility reduces handoffs, improves consistency, and provides clear accountability for the work performed.
Do you use genuine OEM parts in your remanufactured engines?
Yes. We use genuine OEM parts rather than aftermarket components as part of our commitment to rebuild quality and long-term reliability. A remanufactured engine is only as dependable as the components used to build it, which is why we rely on proven OEM parts instead of lower-cost aftermarket alternatives.
How do you verify engine reliability and performance before delivery?
Each rebuilt engine goes through quality-control checks and final verification before it leaves our facility. Engines are also dyno tested prior to shipment so performance can be evaluated before the engine reaches the customer’s site.
Process Questions
What happens when an engine first arrives at your facility?
We verify customer-provided engine information and begin the intake and documentation process. Establishing accurate engine identification and project information at the beginning helps ensure the engine is properly tracked throughout the rebuild.
How do you inspect an engine before beginning the rebuild?
Before teardown, the exterior is cleaned, available diagnostic information is reviewed, and the engine receives a visual inspection. As teardown progresses, components are examined further so issues that may not appear in diagnostic data can be identified and documented.
What happens during engine teardown and component inspection?
The engine is disassembled to the level required for a complete rebuild, with component groups inspected as they are removed. This allows our team to evaluate wear, damage, contamination, potential causes of engine failure, and other conditions that may affect the final rebuild.
How do you determine which components can be reused and which need to be replaced?
Components are inspected, measured, and evaluated against the applicable specifications and rebuild requirements. Parts that do not meet acceptable standards are repaired where appropriate or replaced rather than being reused simply to reduce cost.
What machining is performed during an engine rebuild?
Machining is performed as required to restore critical surfaces and components to the specifications needed for proper assembly and operation. The extent of machining is determined by engine condition, component measurements, wear, and the requirements of the specific engine.
Are engines assembled to the customer’s specific engine arrangement?
Yes. Engines are assembled to the required arrangement and application specifications. Correct configuration is important because a rebuilt engine must match the equipment and operating requirements it is being returned to.
Are OEM parts used during assembly?
Yes. We use genuine OEM parts as part of our standard rebuild approach. High-quality components coupled with disciplined assembly procedures enable us to deliver reliable engines our customers can count on in demanding field conditions.
How is the rebuild process documented from teardown through final testing?
We document key findings, measurements, parts, photographs, quality-control checks, and additional rebuild information throughout the process. This creates a clear record of the engine’s incoming condition, the work performed, and the steps taken to prepare it for return to service.
How do you test a remanufactured engine before shipment?
Completed engines go through final inspections and quality-control checks before release. Each engine is then dyno tested under controlled load conditions that simulate real-world demands, allowing us to verify performance before shipment.
How is a completed engine prepared and protected for transportation?
Before shipment, the engine receives final condition checks, required covers and protection are installed, and the engine is secured for transport. Our process is designed to protect the work completed during the rebuild through the final handoff to the customer.
